We visualize the “how?” of effective use of learning technologies as a complex task requiring the integration of:

  • The context: This includes the organization or setting in which the use will take place; the culture, people, and policies
  • The implementation strategy: This relates to the procedures for supporting users as they are introduced to, and make use of the new approaches
  • The pedagogical approach: This reflects the underlying vision of learning as well as the tasks, resources, and support in the learning design
  • The technology:  This involves the functionalities available and the interfaces through which the user can make use of the functionalities

These four components are the focus of our 2001 book, “Flexible learning in a digital world: Experiences and expectations”, published by Routledge, ISBN 0-7494-3371-x
